In 2006, newly installed in Paris, a friend recently graduated from the school where I would eventually do a specialization, We were invited to participate, as one of the 4 invited teams, in a project to built fourteen summer villas on a plot located in the Tameslouth sector, 30 minutes from Marrakech, Morocco. Each team would be in charge of making 3 Villas of approximately 400m² and we all agreed to carry out these design exercises around 3 “typologies”: The Central Villa, The Scattered Villa, and the Linear Villa.
Our proposal, after undergoing different changes in the creative processes, is based on the study of the “loci”, the appropriation of the local spatial dialectic, atmospheres, the relationship with materiality and climate, and in turn the development of a system of individual pieces, which from its organization and composition, resolves the “typologies” described above through not individualized exercises, but from their reflection as pieces of a universe that are grouped according to the unique particularity of the terrain their views and their morphology.
The methodology is based on a stereotomical volume, a basement that emerges clearly from the earth and transforms it into space, perforated by interspersed courtyards and simple but strategically located overtures to obtain a composition of light and shadow that evidences the roughness of matter and its color. This volume is made of different materiality, tectonic, which contrasts the brutality of the basement with an envelope in lattice fashion, which stands out for its detail and permeability and that, in turn, at nightfall hints at a light effect as a lamp. In this volume is the main room and its interior and exterior dependencies, a third light volume, in wood, accompanies this volume to create a viewpoint.
